Is this right for me?

A CT coronary angiogram (CTCA) is a detailed scan of the arteries that supply your heart. It can detect plaque, narrowing and early coronary artery disease - often years before any symptoms appear. Most people choose this if they:

  • Have a family history of heart disease, heart attack or stroke
  • Have cardiovascular risk factors - raised cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, or a history of smoking
  • Are over 40 and want a clear picture of their heart and artery health
  • Have symptoms such as chest tightness or breathlessness on exertion that they want investigated
  • Want a reliable baseline measure of their coronary health for peace of mind

This scan may not be suitable, or may need to be postponed, if you:

  • Are pregnant or might be pregnant (the scan uses a small dose of radiation)
  • Have a severe allergy to iodine-based contrast dye
  • Have significantly reduced kidney function (we check this with a blood test beforehand)
  • Have an irregular or very fast heart rhythm that can't be slowed enough for clear images (we assess this at your consultation)

We screen for all of this before your scan, so you'll only ever go ahead when it's safe and appropriate for you.
